Calgary Pride 2009

  1. It seems http://www.pridecalgary.ca doesn't have a comments section so I thought I would post something here. I attended the parade, and was frankly quite disappointed. There were NO floats to speak of, the decorations on vehicles were no more than the odd colored balloon, and not a single Pride flag on Stephen Ave lamp posts. The only noticeable support for the community was a Canadian pride flag waving from the Hyatt Regency. The parade itself was over in minutes and seemed smaller than ever.

There was little promotion in the city for the planned events and the dance was held at Belgo which isn't even a gay bar! I am all for support from local businesses but would have preferred Twisted given its a gay establishment with a sizable dance floor.

I moved here 5 years ago and Pride at that time seemed to be a much celebrated event on 17th ave sw. I remember seeing flags on the lamp posts, in business windows and even Edmonton bars and businesses participated. What has happened to Pride support in this town?
