The Embarcadero Center will be lit up for the holidays. I hear from San Francisco friends that it's a festive place to be for New Year's. There are lots of big-ticket parties all over the city that cater to a wide range of people. Some are in museums and other culture venues. Most bars will have something going on. Brace yourself for recession blues all over the place and panhandlers everywhere. Check SFGate.com, the website of the Chronicle, for events happening while you're in town. Take a light raincoat and dress in layers -- it will be the rainy season. But it will still be much nicer than most of the rest of the country at the time. It is indeed an early-to-bed town, always has been, but that's a good thing. I dont know where you come from, but in my case coming from South Florida, I expected clubs/bars would not have any difficulty finding patrons considering the huge number of gays in this city. Eventually I realized that nightlife activities were not too popular and most places get empty by 12-1 AM. Also, you will not see too many gay tourists (like you will see in LA or Fort Lauderdale) in clubs. By the way, San Franciscan are not the most welcoming crowd toward tourists in a bar/club setting.</p> <p>The weather is cold all year around (like the famous phrase says: I have not experienced a colder winter than a summer in San Francisco). By December is around 40-50 in the evenings. However, every club is equipped with coat checking. My man and I are going to be in SF over the upcoming New Years Eve and we're wondering if there are any typical events that you can count on happening every year. Has anything even been planned yet for this year? Also, outside of events, are there any great places to be to catch fireworks shows? How's the weather around that time of year?
