Amy & Brandie,

I think San Francisco is one of the most progessive and open cities around. I hold hands with my partner almost everywhere in the city and I see a lot of women couples doing the same. I think you'll find complete freedom to be who you are here.

I think the harder transition for you two will be from small town to bigger town. The bigger more populous neighborhoods: Castro, Downtown, Pacific Heights, the busy part of the Mission - all are fine and safe. Violence against gay/lesbians for who there are is nearly unheard of here.

That being said, it is a city and there are time where you'll have to be more vigilant and on the watch for more standard crime (theft, harassment, etc). There are neighborhoods that are best avoided and even in good neighborhoods you should be more alert at night if there aren't a lot of people around.

Overall, I feel *very* safe in this city and I think you will do too.

Hey Guys...

We would like to thank you for all the great tips on SF. We are still looking for new friends in SF... because we will be moving their soon.

Another question....

I heard that if your out of the Castro district that me and my partner should not hold hands or show any sign of public affection? Is this true???

NOTE: We are in a sm town in eastern Oregon where showing any sort of affection is frown upon. Which doesn't stop us... we have been out and proud for 10 years.

Our main concern is being in a bigger city and the response from the public. Being in a small town we get frowns and nasty comments, which we live with. But, in SF should we be worried about violence?

Thank you Scott, emporium, and Phinpoe...

I agree that the lookout on Tuesdays or Thursdays has a pretty interesting girls' night (double check exact day). Also, the BOC (bar on church) draws a steady female clientele from what I've seen.

Amy, I live here in San Francisco and it's a great town. You'll feel comfortable anywhere in the city - there are tons of gay and lesbian residents and tourists and you can have a romantic dinner, hold hands and feel comfortable just about anywhere.

Our San Francisco guide lists some of the best bars & restaurants to try - I would recommend all of them. (I've even reviewed a lot personally).

As far as nightlife for women there are a few specific spots and then a lot of mixed gay/straight places. The Lexington Club is a popular women's bar, but it's an acquired taste - you might try it to see if it fits you. The Lookout in the Castro has a women's night on Thursday night and their Sunday evening party usually draws a lot of women too - it's my favorite party of the week.

Hope that helps!

Hello Everyone,

My Partner and I are going to SF on March 6th. We are looking for some tips on Gay/Lesbian friendly places for night life and just to hang out. We have heard of the Castro District, but all the info I am reading is stating that the bars or clubs are all mostly men.

We are staying down by Union Square...
Any tips would be great. Also if your in the Area we would love to meet new friends.

Thanks
Amy & Brandie

Hi all,

I'm in Houston for 3 months, and I would like to meet a lot of guys to show me around, to discover Houston and Texas, and to hang out with good guys, all kind. Maybe a lover for 3 months. I'm 38, handsome, used to be 180lbs of muscle, but need to come back to the gym. Without muscle it is impossible to meet guys. I am brun with blue eyes. and I speak french as well. I used to live in Florida for 10 years, so I am very close to the american culture. I live outside of downtown. I think I am south Westh by the beltway. Let me know. My mail is graphifred@mac.com. I love movies, electronic music, all kind of art and nice things. I like big guys, but not an obigation.

See you soon.

Hi!
Me and my friend go to San Francisco and LA from July 24 - August 8. We'd like to make some friends there and maybe have some people to guide us! To show us places, bars, nightlife and maybe lodging. We are from Amsterdam, Holland. Drop me a line!
Thanx, cu
Pete (KakOla at GayCities)
