I takes more than 9 months to get the real feel of a city. And that post was 4 moths ago. A lot of things has changed in the past six months. The gay summit has indeed taken a long time to come about. But lately, things are coming into fruition at a bullets rate of speed. And the two prides (Pride Charlotte and Black Gay Pride) is helping people come out of their closets little by little. We may not be New york right now, but we will continue to progress. And nothing will stop us. Because we are a proud city of TRANSPLANTS! And we like it!

Don't waste your time in Charlotte. The gay people there are very cliquish and stand-offish. I lived there almost 9 years and have some good memories, but found it very frustrating to find community. This site is correct in its overview of Charlotte and the lack of community. Charlotte is still very provincial and a victim of the Bible belt. It wants to be a big city, but can't throw off the oppression of a very conservative citizenry. Hence, a lot of gays are afraid to be themselves. It is like everyone is hiding and can't be comfortable in their skin. Hence, you are left with a very cliquish bunch of gay people who are afraid to talk to anyone they do not know. I also grew up in Tennessee and later to Virginia. If you don't want to move too far away, consider Atlanta, Miami, or D.C. area. There are a lot of gay people in these areas. The remainder of the southeast is a virtual wasteland for gays.

Well, this is a banking town full of hot transplants. Lets hope it stays that way with recent banking troubles. Again, its a bank town so there is not much of a weeknight gay life (everyone works 8-5). Nightlife on weekends is getting better. Check out the Charlotte section of this web page for clubs. Most popular are Gun and Garden, Eagle, and Sidelines.
In general Charlotte is an island of blue in a red state. Due to the transplants the city is very diverse and pretty much accepting of the gays. Most folks I know are OUT to their family and even neighbors. We host the HRC dinner here and have a growing yearly Pride festival.
If you are house shopping I would look Uptown, Dilworth, Plaza-Midwood, and Elizabeth areas (realtors will know those areas). If cost is an issue there is a small gay-borhood north of Charlotte called Scotsborough off of Christenbury Road. My 2 cents. I have been here all my life and don't see moving. Enjoy!
