The hotels in SouthSide are offering Come Back Bargains, many restaurants and bars slicing prices a bit and trying to alert the public that we never had a problem here whatsoever but suffered and continue to due to horrible reporting. Beaches are again getting strollers and loungers. The parades are rolling and the quarter is packed with tourist. This year is a little more festive due to the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV victory last week. Visitors from all over the country have been in town ever since the game, some planning to stay through the Mardi Gras holiday. Finding a hotel for the holiday weekend is near impossible with all the city’s elevated attention.</p> <p> The “Krewes of Carnival” started this year, as it does every year, with the Krewe du Vieux through the Marigny and French Quarter. Although it was cold, many locals turned out to celebrate the start of Mardi Gras. I rode in the Mystic Knights of Adonis the day before the Super Bowl. It was my second year riding as a member of that krewe, and it was so much fun. One parade that will go down in history books is the Saints Super Bowl parade. It was planned and set to roll the week of the Super Bowl, regardless if we would win or not. Using signature floats from some of the biggest parades, the parade brought in a crowd that was larger than any Mardi Gras has ever had. The “Who Dat Nation” came from everywhere making most roads congested; however, after forty-something years, I think we deserve to bathe in the glory for a little while.</p> <p> One thing that has me really confused is the weather. The news forecasted snow in some areas of southern Louisiana. Normally I’d be running around in shorts at this time, but it’s 40 degrees out there! It’s definitely been the longest lingering cold winters that I can remember. Regardless of what the weather throws us in the upcoming week, it will have no effect on the celebration.</p> <p> Despite all the parties, parades, balls, dinners, and whatever else is going on, my favorite part of Mardi Gras is the costumes on Mardi Gras day. The 46th Annual Bourbon Street Awards is set to kick off on February 16 at 12PM. This is the best and most creative costume contest I have ever seen! Celebrity hosts, Bianca Del Rio and Blanche Debris, are scheduled to emcee the event. The stage will be located in the street at St. Anne and Bourbon.</p> <p> This year Mardi Gras is also a personal celebration of mine because it is the first holiday in my new apartment. I recently moved downtown and literally into the center of everything. When I moved in, I had no idea of the major events that were about to take place. It’s still all surreal to me and I’m waiting to wake up although I hope I never do! I attended the parade, and was frankly quite disappointed. There were NO floats to speak of, the decorations on vehicles were no more than the odd colored balloon, and not a single Pride flag on Stephen Ave lamp posts. The only noticeable support for the community was a Canadian pride flag waving from the Hyatt Regency. The parade itself was over in minutes and seemed smaller than ever.</p> <p>There was little promotion in the city for the planned events and the dance was held at Belgo which isn't even a gay bar! I am all for support from local businesses but would have preferred Twisted given its a gay establishment with a sizable dance floor.</p> <p>I moved here 5 years ago and Pride at that time seemed to be a much celebrated event on 17th ave sw. I remember seeing flags on the lamp posts, in business windows and even Edmonton bars and businesses participated.
