Feeling a little lost is part of NY's charm! You'll have a blast just wandering around, but I'd start out in Chelsea, work your way down to the Meat Packing District (take the HIGHLINE if it's nice weather--you can ask anyone where it is), then over to the West Village, and then you can either go south for great shopping in Soho, or keep moving east for awesome little restaurants and shops in the East Village. I definitely suggest wandering with a map--you'll find the structure of the city isn't hard to figure out once you're out and about, and the subways make it super easy to get around. Here are some of my favorite bars, but you should look through the new york bars here on gaycities and see which ones pop out for you.

Therapy
Rockit Fridays
Eastern Bloc

As far as where to stay, hotels are usually super pricey in Manhattan. You may want to check out some hostels as a way to save some $$. Also, if you're an art lover, be sure to check out Moma or the Guggenheim. They are both amazing!

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions :)

Sure thing, billyboy. I lived in San Juan for a year, back when I was in my 20s. I never ran into any anti-gay sentiment in the city. I think if you go to other Puerto Rican cities, you might not find any gay presence at all. Also, you may not hear any English. But you can do day trips to most of the outlying sightseeing locations (such as El Yunque Rain Forest or Rio Camuy Caves) and still be back in San Juan before the end of the day. The weather is usually dependably in the mid-80s during January and February. Hope you decide to go, and hope you have a great time.

yes, manny is right. these venues are perfectly legal, and there have not been reported raids in many, many years, even though there are literally dozens of sex clubs and bathhouses across the country. so, camper, go have some great, safe fun!

Actually, a gay bathhouse is not a public place. It is a private club, and so it is not illegal. I've never heard of a gay bathhouse anywhere getting raided. The only thing you need to be careful about is making sure to practice safe sex - a lot of guys engage in barebacking in those places.

My boyfriend and I are going to Oahu from Dec 25th to Jan 3rd and are looking for some guys to hang out with while there. We are looking for a couple that is our age, but really it would just be nice to find some friendly faces that don't mind doing touristy stuff with us (ie- club/beach hopping, local restaurants, etc).

Hi, being new to the Atlanta area, I'd love to check these places out, they look great - but with all the police issues of late isn't it just another place ready for another police raid? I'm just afraid to go with what is going on. Can anyone shed any light on this - I'm assuming the activity that goes on here is somewhat illegal (sex in public) so how do we know they won't be next on the police list of targeted gay establishments?

OK, don’t throw your shoes at me when I make this controversial recommendation. I’m going with Oahu! It’s the only one of the islands with any kind of a gay presence. The are lots of hotels to choose from in all price ranges. Hula’s in Waikiki is the only gay bar that remains in Hawaii, to my knowledge. Oahu has a lot of things to do, from busy Waikiki to beautiful Hanauma Bay to the quiet North Shore. If you have any interest in history or culture, you can see the USS Arizona or the Bishop Museum. If you want to avoid a Mormon-owned business, don’t go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. I’ve never been to the PCC and have no plans to go. Maui and Kauai have stunning natural beauty and are fine for a few days, but there isn’t much gay presence. And frankly, they're a bit too quiet for me. Same with The Big Island--interesting but a bit quiet. And finally, I can only recommend Lanai and Molokai as day trips by boat from Maui.

Yes, billyboy, Puerto Rico is a great place to visit in January and February. Look at the San Juan listings here in GayCities. The Condado area of San Juan has a variety of places to stay, many restaurants, and also lots of nighttime activites. There is a gay beach near the Atlantic Beach Hotel, and a couple of gay bars in the same vicinity. San Juan is a nice choice for a winter vacation from the chilly east coast.

Yes, I can help. I've been to London, Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath, Canterbury, Leeds and Dover. London and the surrounding areas are culturally rich and diverse. St. Paul's is an architectural masterpiece designed by Christopher Wren. Don't miss it. There are countless cultural and historical sights in and around London. One of my favorites is the Tower of London. The list goes on and on. Send me a message if you like, and I'll be happy to tell you my favorite things to do there.

Equality has come a long way in New England in a short time. Definitely not as fast as anyone of us would like, but progress non the less. I am heartbroken about the vote in Maine, the very fact that people can vote someone's ability to have equal rights in America appalls me. I am optimistic that the right thing will come soon. Until then I believe that Harvey Milk was probably right with his ideology that gay people should be visible, everyone knows gay people even if they are not aware of it. People are more willing to turn from all the hate and lies of discriminating groups with "godly" agenda's and support equality when they are able to realize that someone they care about is the victim of such discrimination. As for traveling in Maine, there are many gay friendly places and people. Perhaps avoiding the merchants that gave financial support to the Yes on 1 campaign would be the way to go. Be strengthened and know that equality for all will be a reality someday soon!

Contrary to what it is sold through the media, SF is not a gay party town. I dont know where you come from, but in my case coming from South Florida, I expected clubs/bars would not have any difficulty finding patrons considering the huge number of gays in this city. Eventually I realized that nightlife activities were not too popular and most places get empty by 12-1 AM. Also, you will not see too many gay tourists (like you will see in LA or Fort Lauderdale) in clubs. By the way, San Franciscan are not the most welcoming crowd toward tourists in a bar/club setting.

The weather is cold all year around (like the famous phrase says: I have not experienced a colder winter than a summer in San Francisco). By December is around 40-50 in the evenings. However, every club is equipped with coat checking. The best website to check events is Tobygo.com.

Dan and bullseye, you guys make a really good point about not boycotting states where we've lost marriage referendums. Our travel would be limited! The thing we have to recognize is that the other side's negative ad campaigns were successful in California and now in Maine. I remember the TV ads in the L.A. market last year. The other side's scare tactics apparently worked better than our high-road approach. Those negative ads worked well in Orange and San Diego Counties, both with high voter density. They used the same scare tactics in Maine. Any ideas how we can combat this?

that's a good point, dan. we can't boycott all 31 states, including the one we live in, california. but i will be selective about where i spend my marriage dollars, and i have to say i'm leaning toward boston... oh, guess i need a boyfriend first!

I can't say a trip to Maine was on my horizon regardless of the outcome of this vote. Though it is certainly a blow to hear of the defeat, I don't think a boycott of the state would likely do any good. If I ever do make it out there, I would definitely try to stick to gay and gay friendly businesses as best I could. The vote wasn't a landslide, and the negative result unfortunately overshadows the very positive "No on 1" campaign and all the open-minded citizens of the state. If I were to boycott every state that has voted gay marriage down, not only would I have to leave my home state of California, but I wouldn't be able to visit another 30 or so states that make up this beautiful-however backwards at times-country of ours.

Please, before you decide to boycott Maine because of this disappointing vote, remember all the gay and gay-friendly business owners in the charming village of Ogunquit and the beautiful seaside city of Portland. Businesses are already struggling in this challenging economic environment, and we need to think twice before we contribute to that struggle. Yesterday's vote was upsetting and frustrating, but I would like to pose the question about why this issue is being put to a vote anyway! Gay civil rights were not put to a vote by our neighbors in Canada. Black civil rights were not put to a vote in the U.S. 1964. LGBT people need a strong persuasive voice like MLK and a president who isn't afraid of the issue. OK, Pete is now stepping down from his soap box! But please go to Maine--it's a beautiful state!

I'm incredibly frustrated. I just don't see how people can take away existing rights. But will I not travel to Portland or Ogunquit? I live in California, so I can't really throw stones - we too had our rights taken away, but I don't want people to stop coming to visit me.

How can we make an impact in a way that matters - I don't want all the businesses run by LGBT folks an d our allies to suffer, but I would like to have some sort of major impact on their economy that says "don't f*** with the gays". It's a really tough situation.

I'm not sure what I will do yet cause I love the state and have many gay friends in Portland I want to support. But it is very upsetting to have our rights just stripped away, and to watch the jubilation of those who organized against equality. They need to be held accountable.
