What we say
Closed for renovation. Will it ever reopen? New Sign says "18th St. Bar"
CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATION.
While the crowd here is mixed racially, this is one of the few places in the Castro that regularly attracts a Latin/African-American crowd. If it seems like this place has been around forever, it is because it has -- its been there for over 30 years. If the new owner has his way, this place will soon be closing for a much-needed remodeling (a good thing) but it will leave the Castro missing a good dive bar and a good place for people of color to gather.

The new sign for the renovated bar has gone up, and the place is going to be named 18th Street Bar. Not a great name (IMHO) and not a great sign either -- it's a crazy, rainbow-striped circus tent. My guess is that the interior won't be understated elegance. You can see a picture at http://castroshopper.vox.com/library/post/its-all-about-the-awnings.html .

It is about time people of color had their place back. While it is true that other bars have taken some of the slack, I miss a place for us to call our own. I've heard rumors they are trying to get rid of the old clientele by keeping the place closed for such a long time. If that is true someone needs to start a letter-writing campaign with the mayor's office. The gay community has a lot to answer to when it comes to diversity in San Francisco. I had a much easier experience in West Hollywood for gay's sake!
So, what do you say?
